3 Strategies to Help Your Photography Evoke Emotion

Updated: Jan 23, 2023

The number one reason to strive for photos that evoke emotion is simple...making an emotional connection with the audience increases interest, creates curiosity, and builds a story.

1. Help Subjects to Feel Comfortable and Natural. The classic line of an unexperienced photo taker is "Stop being awkward!!!" Although the intention is correct, to get the subjects to act natural, this method usually leads to subjects becoming even more awkward and aware of the camera.

The easiest way to help the subject(s) become comfortable and natural, is to use prompts.

For example, have the couple walk towards you. Then, during the walk instruct the couple to look in different directions, kiss each other, or even bump hips for fun reactions.

2. Don't Shy Away From Motion Blur. Although it is easy to dismiss blur, blurry images can create interest. If using prompt and motion in your photography strategy, you are inevitably going to get some pictures that are blurry. Embrace these photos and let your creative juices flow!

3. Simplify the Shot. With minimal distraction in the background, where do your eyes go? Your eyes have only one place to go, the subjects in the image. By highlighting the subjects in your frame, the emotions do not get lost in the image.

If you do not have a simple background, like this lake scene, here are some ways you can achieve this result:

  • Shoot low with the sky as your background.

  • Set your aperture low (2.2-2.5) and move subjects away from distracting elements and backdrops.

  • Edit with black and white images to eliminate color distractions.
