About the Couple
My photographer friend, Megan Buth Photography, and I put out a model call because we were longing for a creative outlet after a long winter. Thankfully, Hannah responded to me and we set up the shoot!
Hannah and her boyfriend Charles are high school sweethearts, having met each other during their senior year.
Even though it was their first time having professional photos taken together, they had amazing energy and clearly had a blast. Their joyous nature shone through each shot!
Location Scouting; Photography Locations in Downtown Saginaw
We wanted this couple photo session in Downtown Saginaw, Michigan to be perfect! Location scouting is a critical part of photography. It’s not just about finding the right place to take pictures, but also making sure it fits with the overall vision of the project. A good photographer will spend time researching and visiting potential locations before committing to one. This helps them find the perfect spot that will bring out the best in their photos while also ensuring that all safety and logistical concerns are addressed.
Downtown Saginaw is very industrial, so we made sure our photography subjects wore more casual outfits, such as denim and vintage-style clothing, to reflect the atmosphere. We shot at the following locations: 1) grain towers, 2) back alley stairs, 3) rooftop parking garage (all labeled on the map).
Couple Posing Ideas to Create Movement
Photography is a powerful tool that can capture real emotions and create lasting memories. I always use photography prompts to encourage movement and genuine expressions from the couple. By using prompts tailored to their personalities and interests, I'm able to create unique and meaningful photos.
Pose Idea #1 - Sling Shot
"Take turns sling-shotting each other forward. Hannah, you lead, run forward and pull Charles past you. Then, Charles you pull Hannah past you. Run all the way past me."
Pose Idea #2 - Whisper Funny Phrases
A great way to get your couples to laugh is to have one partner whisper funny phrases in the other's ear. For example, "whisper your favorite vegetable in the weirdest voice you can think of!". This simple prompt is sure to bring plenty of laughs and smiles to the couple.
Pose Idea #3 - Small Movements
After getting a couple in a pose, encourage little movements. For example, rub your partners arms, comb your partners hair behind their ear, tip your heads togethers, go in for a kiss in slow motion. The possibilities are endless! But prompting your couple to keep moving helps the moment stay alive and gives you a lot of variety in poses.
